The hardwood vs softwood question confuses almost every beginner — and the labels are misleading. The split is botanical, not a measure of how hard the wood actually is. Hardwood vs softwood: the real difference

Hardwoods come from broadleaved, deciduous trees (oak, beech, walnut, maple) that grow slowly and usually produce denser, tighter-grained timber. Softwoods come from conifers (pine, spruce, cedar, fir) that grow fast and are generally lighter and cheaper. “Generally” is the key word — the reliable measure of actual hardness is the Janka scale, not the label.

The Janka scale settles it

Janka measures the force needed to press a steel ball into the wood. It cuts through the label confusion: American beech sits around 1,300 lbf, while some “hardwoods” are softer than pine. When durability or fine detail matters, read the Janka number, not the botanical class.

Which should you use?

Choose a hardwood when the piece must last, carry fine detail or show a premium finish — furniture, relief carving, wall art, cutting boards. Choose a softwood when cost, weight or speed matters more, or for practice and rustic work.
