Get it right and the piece cuts cleanly, holds fine detail and lasts for decades. Get it wrong and it splits, warps or fights every tool you own. This guide shows you how to choose the right wood for your project — from hardness and grain to movement and moisture — so you buy once and build with confidence.

We run a working carving studio, so everything below comes from cutting these species by hand and on the CNC every week — not from a textbook.

How to Choose the Right Wood: The 6 Factors That Matter

Almost every good wood choice comes down to six questions. Work through them in order and the shortlist for your project narrows quickly.

1. Hardness — and the Janka scale

The Janka scale measures how much force (in pounds-force, lbf) it takes to press a small steel ball halfway into the wood. It is the fastest way to compare species: low numbers mean soft, easy-to-cut wood; high numbers mean dense, hard-wearing wood. As a rule of thumb, softer woods are kinder for hand carving and beginners, medium-density woods hold crisp CNC detail while staying durable, and the hardest woods belong on surfaces that take wear.

Wood species

Janka (lbf)

Best suited for

Basswood / Lime

410

Hand carving, whittling, beginners

Pine

380–420

Practice pieces, rustic builds

Poplar

540

Paint-grade work, budget projects

Cedar

900

Outdoor projects, aromatic storage

Cherry

995

Fine furniture, warm tone

Walnut

1,010

Premium furniture, dark detailed relief

Red Oak

1,290

Furniture, flooring, strong grain

American Beech

1,300

CNC relief, furniture, kitchenware

Ash

1,320

Curved and bent work, handles

White Oak

1,360

Outdoor furniture, boatbuilding

Hard Maple

1,450

Cutting boards, flooring, wear surfaces

2. Hardwood or softwood?

This split is botanical, not a measure of actual hardness — balsa is technically a hardwood, and dense yew is a softwood. In practice, hardwoods (beech, oak, walnut, maple) give you tight grain, durability and a finer finish, while softwoods (pine, cedar, spruce) are cheaper, lighter and faster to work but dent easily. Choose a hardwood when the piece must last or show fine detail; a softwood when cost, weight or speed matters more.

3. Grain, figure and how the board is cut

Straight, even grain is predictable and carves cleanly; wild or interlocked grain looks striking but tears out under a chisel or bit. How the log is sawn matters too: quarter-sawn and rift-sawn boards stay flatter and move less than flat-sawn boards, though they cost more. For anything with fine relief, even grain beats dramatic figure every time.

4. Wood movement and moisture

Wood is never truly “done” — it swells and shrinks as humidity changes, and that movement is what cracks a badly built panel. Always start with kiln-dried (KD) stock, let it acclimatise to the room where it will live, and design so the wood can move. For anything going outdoors, only naturally durable species (white oak, cedar, teak) survive without heavy treatment.

5. Workability — hand tools vs CNC

The right wood depends on how you cut it. For hand carving, a soft, even-grained wood like basswood or lime lets tools glide and forgives mistakes. For CNC relief carving, you want a denser, fine-grained wood — beech is our default — because it holds sharp edges and tiny details without fuzzing or chipping. A wood that carves beautifully by hand can be a poor choice on the machine, and the reverse is just as true.

6. Cost, availability and sustainability

The “best” wood you cannot source easily is the wrong wood. Local species are cheaper, greener and usually better acclimatised to your climate — one reason we carve in European beech rather than imported exotics. Where you can, choose responsibly harvested or FSC-certified stock; it costs a little more and protects the supply you will need next year.

Match the Wood to Your Project

Once you know the six factors, matching wood to project becomes simple. Use this quick reference as a starting point:

Project

Go-to woods

Hand carving & whittling

Basswood, lime, butternut

CNC relief & sign-making

Beech, cherry, walnut, hard maple

Indoor furniture

Oak, beech, cherry, walnut

Outdoor furniture

White oak, cedar, teak

Cutting boards

Hard maple, beech, walnut

Wall art & decor

Beech, walnut, oak

This series goes deep on each of these: the best wood for carving, the best wood for CNC and relief work, the real difference between hardwood and softwood, and how to choose the best wood for wall art and decorative carvings.

Why We Carve in Beech

If you take one shortcut from this guide, it is beech. With a fine, even grain and a Janka hardness around 1,300 lbf, beech holds crisp detail under the CNC while staying affordable and easy to source across Europe. It is why every relief panel in our workshop shop starts as solid beech — and why our downloadable STL models for CNC routers are designed and tested to carve cleanly in it.

For exhaustive, lab-measured data on any species, we cross-check every board against the independent Wood Database — a reference worth bookmarking.

The Bottom Line

To choose the right wood, work through the six factors — hardness, hardwood vs softwood, grain, movement, workability and cost — then match the shortlist to your project. Do that once and you stop guessing at the timber yard and start building pieces that last. Have a project in mind and not sure which wood fits? Message the workshop — we are happy to point you the right
